How to prepare a business grant application

By Fundability · Updated

A grant application should show that an eligible project meets a specific funder’s objectives and can be delivered with a credible budget. Start with the current scheme rules, then map each question to evidence. A strong generic business plan is not a substitute for answering the funder’s actual criteria.

Check fit before writing

Confirm the applicant, geography, project activities, costs, timetable and funding conditions match the scheme. Read the current official guidance rather than relying on an old summary or an AI-generated eligibility answer.

List the mandatory requirements and the evidence for each. If something is unclear, use the funder’s published enquiry process. Do not imply eligibility or an award until it is established by the appropriate authority.

Connect activities, outcomes and costs

Explain the problem, proposed work, responsible people and measurable outputs. Connect each cost to an activity and each activity to an outcome the scheme supports. State assumptions and delivery risks clearly.

Check payment timing and any required contribution against cash flow. A project can appear fully funded on paper while still needing cash to cover expenditure before a grant payment arrives.

  • Measurable outputs and the evidence you will retain.

Use Fundability for preparation, within its scope

Business planning and financial projections can help organise the evidence behind a funding application. Fundability’s public roadmap describes further grant and loan application capabilities as developing; do not assume there is a live grant-submission or grant-award service.

Use the available document and assessment tools for preparation, check current features and contact the team if you need to confirm support for a particular task. Fundability does not guarantee a grant.

Review the final submission against the questions

Ask someone to compare the application with the published criteria, checking dates, totals, attachments and unsupported claims. Keep a copy of the submitted version and the source evidence.

UK grants and competitions change over time. Use the official scheme page for current deadlines and terms. Get professional advice on contractual, tax or legal obligations when appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Can Fundability submit a grant application for me?
Do not assume this is included. Its current public roadmap describes additional grant and loan capabilities as developing. Confirm the current service directly before relying on it.
Does a grant-readiness assessment guarantee an award?
No. The funder decides eligibility and awards under its own rules and competitive process.
